“The child...has a personality of his own. He carries within himself the beauty and dignity of a creativity that can never be erased and for which his spirit, pure and sensitive, extracts from us a most delicate kind of care.”

Philosophy About Our School Our Classrooms
shim3

The Montessori School of Coshocton has provided a unique learning environment for preschool age children for over twenty-five years. Shaped by the philosophy of Dr. Maria Montessori, our school is based on the idea that young children are natural learners, absorbing effortlessly from whatever is present in their everyday environment.

They learn best when interested in an activity, especially one they have chosen themselves. In preparing our classrooms, we provide children with activities and an environment that sustains this love of learning. Our goal is that our students are provided the opportunity to fully realize their potential as individuals and as members of the community.

Montessori encompasses a philosophy by which children are allowed to develop naturally and fully, each at his or her own pace. Under the guidance of certified Montessori teachers, in a specially prepared environment, and using carefully formulated materials, children are given the opportunity to learn in the best ways – by choice and by discovery. The dual qualities of independence and a love of learning are nurtured in such a way that both competence and confidence result.

The Montessori Environment is divided into the following areas:

Practical Life---skills of daily living create independence; care of environment, care of self, movement.

Sensorial---exploring the world in color, size, shape, sound and touch; provides basis for math, language and music.

Language---from spoken to written, hear and use precise vocabulary for all activities; experience sound and formation of letters, combines for words and sentences.

Mathematics---from concrete to abstract, child experiences the concept of “how many” by holding it in hand; materials increase in complexity.

Cultural---Art and music, geography and the sciences.
