The Classroom Materials
• On low shelves, arranged top to bottom, left to right according to skill level.
• Children choose own work for as long as they want; children return work to shelf.
• Materials are inviting - colored beads, knobbed puzzles, special shapes.
• Materials have a purpose, isolate one quality - shape, color, size, etc.
• Materials are self correcting.
• Materials progress from simple to complex, from concrete to abstract designed to prepare children indirectly for future learning.
Montessori aims to develop the full potential of the child, not just from an academic point of view, but also from a
"whole child" perspective. Self-esteem, tolerance, mutual respect and concern are all characters that are developed in a
Montessori environment.
Montessori education is about “freedom within a framework”. In a Montessori environment, there is an inherent structure
of materials in each curriculum area placed in sequential order from simple to difficult activities and from concrete to
abstract work. In a Montessori classroom, children refer to playing or activities as their “work” because it gives a
certain dignity to their learning.
