“Even though this development takes place in secret, it would be wrong to imagine, as in the case of speech, for example, that it is not happening.”

With all this freedom, isn't there confusion?

The concept of freedom in the classroom is a freedom within limits. A child is allowed to work freely so long as he does not disturb others. Children having freedom to follow their interests are generally happy and busily involved in their work. Also the child "chooses" activities within the range of activities suited to his stage of development under the guidance of the directress, so here again there is freedom but within limits.

What is the best age to start pre school?

Dr. Montessori outlined various periods of "sensitivity'. During these times a child is more capable of and interested in learning specific concepts, at age 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 a special sense of order, concentration, co ordination and independence begin to emerge. This time is ideal to begin a child's training in Montessori as they are at the perfect period to build a strong learning foundation.

Why is the 5 day option the most beneficial for children?

This sequential program allows the spontaneous learning of the child to flow smoothly with minimal interruptions, The child can return to an activity of interest and quickly start from where he left off without losing a period of days in between.

The Montessori experience has been that just about every child quickly and happily adapts to a preschool schedule of 5 mornings per week. Most, children benefit from the routine, finding it familiar and therefore giving them. a, greater sense of "security", It also provides a solid base to build upon when phasing in extended days, which means that the transition to attending school 5 full days per week is achieved easily and without any trauma for the child.
